Dentists examine and treat problems with teeth, gums, and mouth. Dentists use dental tools, x-rays, or diagnostic equipment to determine dental health. Some dentists have their own practice with a small group of staff, or some work with a partner or group.

Dentists need:

· to have good use of their hands and fingers

· excellent communication skills

· problem solving skills

· to pay attention to detail

Dentists need a bachelor’s degree (four years) and then a doctoral degree through dental school. This usually takes a total of eight years. Dentists must also pass exams to receive a license to work in their state.

Dentists may use x-rays, dental lasers, optical scanners, computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacturing software, CT scans, or medical software to keep records.

Salary/Job Outlook

The average salary for a dentist is $159,200. New job opportunities are expected in the future due to the need for dental health as the population ages.
