WHY: George Lerner wanted a toy that children could design themselves.
FUN FACT: Mr. Potato Head parts were first given out in cereal boxes. The first Mr. Potato Head only had parts including eyes, ears, noses, and mouths, and parents were supposed to supply their children with real potatoes or any other fruit or vegetable to use for the head. The plastic head was introduced in 1964.
