WHO: William Frisbie in Connecticut
WHY: William Frisbie owned the Frisbie Pie Company. Customers used to throw the empty pie tins to each other while yelling “FRISBIE!”. William and his partner decided to make the plastic version: the Flying Saucer, later named the “Pluto Platter”. In 1958, Wham-O toy company bought it and named it Frisbee.
FUN FACT: 100 million Frisbees were sold by 1977.
